Essay on Testing

              Animal Testing

One thing I think is very unfair and cruel is animal testing. Animal testing is unfair because millions of animals die for a silly little experiment. Who decided that animals should get tested? I’m pretty sure you and I wouldn't like to have shots being put on us every day.

There are many animals that get tested like rats and pigs. 90% of animals are used for testing. Now, I strongly dislike rats, but they still shouldn’t get tested on. What did animals ever do to us? Nothing. So then why do people test on them? Pigs, rats, sheep, rabbits, and birds are just a few animals that get tested every day. 100 million animals die each year because of animal testing. Now that’s a ton of dead animals.

Now, imagine this: You’re in a small cage. Pigs crowd around you. They take you out of your cage and you nervously wonder, What experiment is next? When can I sleep? When can I eat something.? I’m hungry! This is exactly what happens around the world every day… but we are the pigs. We are hurting animals and we don’t even realize it. So many animals die because of us. We are hurting animals because we are testing on them. This is cruel and it violates animal rights. It makes sweet, pretty, kitties and cute little puppies have health problems and chemicals and toxins in their body.

People test on animals because they want to help people with diseases and problems. They just want to make our world better. But we shouldn’t test on animals. Animal testing hurts animals and if so many die each year, they might be not so many in the world. Maybe they could even become extinct. Then, finally, people might realize the danger they’ve done by testing on animals.

One example of animal testing is the company EpiBone. The company EpiBone uses pig and rat jaws, but EpiBone ends up killing the animals. I read this in a book about 30 powerful and inspirational  women. At first, I thought I would really like her because she looked nice and she held a bone so I thought she would help humans. But as I read on, I got angry and I thought that the woman who created EpiBone (Nina Tandon) shouldn’t be in that book because (sorry, Nina) she didn’t seem very inspirational to me! Maybe adding another person and adding a label on top of her head saying un-inspirational would’ve done the trick.  I’m a girl, and I love reading about women, but this just took my self-esteem down.

That’s when I realized that animal testing was a huge problem. I spent time researching this topic because it really mattered to me, and I couldn’t just let it pass by me. I still can’t believe that I’m writing an essay on this because animal testing shouldn’t exist and it shouldn’t be a problem.

Another example is  Vioxx, a medicine that opened in 1999 that was tested on animals. It stopped 10 years later.  Why? Because it killed about 60,000. Wait, didn’t I just say it was tested on animals? Yeah, I did, because it was, and yet it didn’t work. It showed no harm to animals, so people thought it was safe. Was it really safe?  No. I chose this example because I wanted to show you that animal testing is not always reliable, and if animals have a different reaction than humans, lives are at stake.

Almost all testing is for a purpose, like vaccines and legal drugs. But some people test on animals for useless things like makeup and beauty products. Because beauty and a kit to cover  your pores isn’t important at all. Do we really need makeup? No. Do we really need vaccines and legal drugs? Yes. But there should be another alternative besides testing on animals. For example, we could use alternative organs and specialized computer models instead.

There’s a never ending list of animals that get tested. Labs should find out another way to test their new ideas instead of testing on animals. This is a worldwide problem, and not many people care because we’re not in the cages. We don’t feel pain. People don’t test on us. We don’t have 20 or more experiments that pinch, poke, and prod us every day. We have someone to love us and care for us and keep us safe. We don’t feel sad and alone in the world with no family with us when we get tested (which doesn’t happen, because we don’t get tested). Why them? Why not us? Why do poor, innocent animals get tested instead of us? How can people not care about these animals and this problem? People let it pass and they think it’s all okay. Why?

Why?

Now, today, just take a moment to think about why all these animals get tested. All people do is ask why and forget it and do other stuff. Like I said, this is a huge problem and most people don’t really care that much. There are many things you can do. You could donate to PETA. You could buy cruelty free cosmetics and cleaning products. You could do anything. But maybe you, yes, YOU can try to help change this.
